Houston Cougars vs. Oklahoma Sooners, first game of the season for each team. The Cougars start the season playing on the road and with a new coach. This year Dana Holgorsen took the Cougars under her command. Last season the Cougars closed with a positive record with Major Applewhite 8-5 overall. On the other hand the Sooners hope to have another season as good as the previous one with Lincoln Riley. The same coach with the same strategy.
Oklahoma Sooners: At home we are dangerous.
The Sooners last year had a good season. The team was champion of the Big 12 winning the title of the conference against the Longhorns. Second year with Lincoln Riley as coach, 12-2 overall and 9-1 at the conference last season. The only two losses last year were on the road. The first against Texas Longhorns 45-48 and the second defeat was against Alabama 34-45 in the Orange Bowl.
At home the Sooners are scoring an average of 51.4 points per game, 36.3 rushes with 261.6 rush yards, 18.6 complete passes with 319.7 pass yards. The first half is the best for the Sooners at home with 28.7 points on average. The defense allows only 27.1 points per game.
Jalen Hurts this season as a starter in most games. Last year Jalen closed the season with only one defeat in 13 games. In 2018 Jalen played with Alabama as QB. The only defeat of last season was against Clemson.
Houston Cougars: New season.
The Cougars hope this season will be better with a new coach. Last season they finished first in the West Division of the American Athletic conference. 8-5 at the conference. But it was a season almost equal to that of 2017 with 7-5. The difference was not big. The Cougars have only one conference title at American Athletic. That championship was in 2015.
On the road the Cougars won a game against the Sooners in 2016. Although that game was in a neutral place, that can be considered as on the road. That victory was 33-23, the Sooners were favorites -11.5 in the spread. But things have changed a lot since then, especially in the defense of the Sooners.
D’Eriq King in his fourth season as QB with the Cougars. Last season, King suffered three losses with the team. Two defeats on the road, one against Texas tech, another against SMU. Just one defeat at home against Temple. King is averaging 63.5% in complete passes, 6.1 rush yards and 167.0 rating.
