Northwestern Wildcats vs. Purdue Boilermakers, Big Ten Conference game. The first games in this conference after restarting activities in October. So far the Wildcats are undefeated in the first three weeks. The same for the Boilermakers, with two weeks of play the team has shown to be in good shape to face the new season.
Northwestern Wildcats: Ready for another win.
The Wildcats know this season is different. But the team remains one of the Big Ten’s favorites to win the conference. The first three weeks were wins against Maryland 43-3, IOWA 21-20 and Nebraska 21-13. The first and last week the team won at home comfortably, but on the road the game was heavier. Last year the Wildcats lost to Purdue at home 24-22. That loss snapped a winning streak since 2015.
The offense averages 16.7 passes completed for 66.7% effectiveness. The average in pass yards is 170.3 with 1 touchdown pass per game. The star running back is Drake Anderson with 193 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. The team averages up to 205.3 rushing yards with 4.1 yards per attempt. Up to 2.7 rushing touchdowns this season. The WR with the best numbers is Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman with 112 yards.
Peyton Ramsey will be the starting quarterback tonight. Ramsey is new to the Wildcats. He is in his senior year, previously he played for Indiana for three years. The numbers are good, 50/75 passes completed for 66.7% effectiveness, 511 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, 129.1 overall rating. 28 person rushes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Purdue Boilermakers: Saturday to kill.
The Boilermakers want to win today. The team won the last two weeks against IOWA 24-20 and Illinois 31-24. This will be the second home game of the season for them. The season is “just” starting for Purdue, but everything indicates that the team is on the right track. The victories in the first weeks have not been so overwhelming, but they are enough to have a perfect record. After this game the Boilermakers play twice on the road against Minnesota.
The Boilermakers’ weak point is defense. The team is allowing up to 186 rushing yards per game for 1.5 touchdowns. The average per attempt is 4.7 rushing yards. That weak point will be deadly if the Wildcats know how to exploit it. Offense is good, 326.5 pass yards per game for 2.5 touchdowns on average. The team doesn’t have a good running back, but Horvarth is doing what he can with 231 yards and a single touchdown.
Aidoa O’Connell in his second year with the Boilermakers. Last season O’Connell played in six games. So far he has been a starter in the first two weeks with the Boilermakers. So far 60/85 passes completed for 70.6% effectiveness, 653 yards, 5 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. 7 staff rushes but nothing positive. 149.8 rating overall. The only two interceptions this season were at home against Iowa.
