Well, it is that time of the year. The NHL is back!
After the success last year, we are starting our predictions with the game between the Boston Bruins and the defending champions, the Washington Nationals. The Capitals will start the campaign at the home ground – the Capital One Arena where they celebrated the Stanley Cup last year. The Capitals were the better team last season as they won all the three meetings against the Bruins.
Boston Bruins Form
The Bruins had a solid season last year as they were able to reach the playoffs. They also played well in the postseason as they have eliminated the Maple Leafs after seven games. However, their good season was interrupted as they were eliminated by Tampa Bay. They are facing the reigning champions the Capitals in an away game and it will be very hard for them to play at the Capital One Arena.
On the offensive side of the game, the Bruins were one of the best teams last season as they had an average score of 3.29 goals per game which placed them on the 6th spot in the NHL.
On the defensive side of the game, the Bruins were on the 4th spot in goals allowed with an average of 2.57 goals per game.
Washington Capitals Form
The Capitals finally won the Stanley Cup. This team was not among the favourites to be at the top, but they showed some spirit and resilience to turn the tide and win the league. They were able to eliminate the Penguins for the first time and that is when everyone started to take them more seriously. Alex Ovechkin was the main force behind this success as he showed some great performances last season.
One notable change in the Capitals camp is that they part ways with head coach Barry Trotz moving to the Islanders. Now, Todd Reirden took over and it will be interesting to see how he will do in his new role.
On the offensive side of the game, the Capitals were on the 9th place in scoring last season as they had an average of 3.12 goals per game.
On the defensive side of the game, the Capitals were on the 16th spot in goals allowed, conceding an average of 2.90 goals per game.
Well, here we go again. The Capitals were able to win the Stanley Cup last season and surely they will aim to start the defence of their title with a win. They have been dominant against the Bruins in recent years and I expect them to win this game. On the other side, the Bruins are a solid team and their offensive firepower is one of the better ones in the NHL. However, I believe that they will not be able to win this game. Go for a Capitals win in this one.
